Al observar la naturaleza es importante tomar en cuenta distintas perspectivas , para tener un mejor entendimiento de que ocurre con los distintos elementos del sistema.

Cuando digo sistema, me refiero al organismo vivo que es la naturaleza y la permacultura . Como dice jarabe de palo , “de según como se mire, todo depende” 🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼

Ósea que nosotros, sin darnos cuenta le sumamos ó restamos valor a las cosas que observamos. Esto, es importante reconocerlo y darse cuenta que en la naturaleza no hay malos ni buenos… Solo hay cosas diferentes 🙌🏽😜

Beautiful Evening, Beautiful Community

At the closing of La Potería campamento – Beautiful evening viewing all of the art (and friendships) created over the past month… and the studio was glowing!

Kale Mamá had the opportunity to collaborate with La Potería to create this urban garden, huerto comunitario; teaching about urban permaculture, food security, along with nature journaling. Thanks to Start Your Garden for donated plants and AP Sketch Co. for our sign design!

Magic Beans

A Garden Education Gurú, Judy, who I met while working with school gardens in California, introduced me to Christmas Lima Beans, amongst many other heirloom seeds and tips for working with kids in the garden setting. How grateful I am to have had the opportunity to work with her!

I have always thought of these seeds as magic beans and keep a few in my pocket in case I have the chance to pass them on to someone else who might plant them. So…. Just ask next time we see each other!

In Puerto Rico I have grown and collected a great amount and replanted the seeds. ‘Baby’ G likes to help shell and sort them…and sometimes they spill all overall and then we race to pick them up.

Activities:

Once the child is old enough to keep out of mouth:

🌱 Planting the seeds / put in soil / may be fun for child to “plant and replant” in soil

🌱 Observing plant growth, watering, finding flowers, collecting seeds, shelling seeds

🌱 Sorting / with other seeds / into various containers

🌱 Counting the seeds using an ice cube tray

For older children:

🌱 Looking up recipes & cooking the beans

🌱 Tracking plant growth / identifying cotyledons / measuring plant

Permaculture Ethics

Permaculture is a whole systems-based thinking / design process, which is guided by the following ethics: Caring for the earth, Caring for people, Sharing of our surplus resources.

As I go through my day I notice examples of how I am using these ethics in my life.

I also notice how I would like to incorporate them more and ways that I could do so.

When I buy a locally grown watermelon, I am…
1. Caring for the earth:

-reducing pollution (buying locally grown, less transportation fuel)

-reducing waste (feeding rinds to chickens, saving seeds and growing sprouts for chickens)

-caring for soil (chicken manure enriches soil, local farmer caring for soil)
2. Caring for people:

-taking care of ourselves (eating healthy, whole foods, that are good for my body)

-taking care of our families, communities (produced locally -> supports local economy -> supports people in my community)
3. Sharing of our surplus resources:

-taking what we need and sharing what we don’t need (taking what we can eat and giving half to a friend or neighbor, saving and sharing seeds)

La Mujer Maravilla y el Super Huerto

Muchas veces nos creemos la mujer maravilla. 💃🏽☄💫 Queremos hacer de todo y el tiempo nunca es suficiente. Por más organizadas y “maravillas” que seamos, es imposible hacerlo todo.

Cuando del huerto se trata, es una tarea de todos en la familia. Después de todo, el huerto, es para el beneficio familiar y hasta me atrevo decir que comunal. Al igual que en cualquier otro proyecto, la participación de todos, es clave en el éxito. Así que en el momento en que se decida comenzar un huerto, este se debe planificar, ejecutar y mantener por todos en la familia. Entonces….

¿Cómo empiezo?

🌿 Primero todos en la casa deben estar dispuestos aportar al huerto.

🌿 Busquen fuentes de inspiración (Pinterest, revistas, blogs,…)

🌿 Comiencen un “wish list” sobre plantas y consulta en el Mercado Agrícola de tu comunidad qué cultivos son mejores para tu área.

🌿 Intenta reusar materiales para la construcción del huerto. Paletas, bloques, drift wood, troncos de arboles caidos, bambuas,…OJO! Materiales reusados no es sinónimo de, ni significa que sea basura ó que se tenga que ver feo.

🌿 Considera comprar plántulas en puestos como “Start Your Garden” en el Aguadilla Farmers Market.

Aunque puedes empezar desde zero y germinar todas tus plantas. Comenzar con plantas establecidas, aumenta las posibilidades de éxito y la gratificación será mas rápida 🙂
